A short history

The Mississauga and other Indigenous peoples lived here before the British founded York in 1793. It was renamed Toronto in 1834. Postwar immigration made it one of the world's most multicultural cities. Toronto became the capital of Ontario in 1867 and is the largest city in Canada.
