At a glance

4/5
Safety

There is no US government advisory for domestic travel, so this follows the UK FCDO USA advice, which says violent crime rarely affects tourists; the main visitor areas are generally fine, with summer heat, lightning, rip currents and the June to November hurricane season the main risks.

3/5
Walkability

The Riverwalk, downtown and Ybor are walkable, but beaches and theme parks need a car.

2/5
Public transport

HART buses and the TECO Line Streetcar between downtown and Ybor help, but beaches need a car or shuttle.

A short history

The Tocobaga and other Native peoples lived around Tampa Bay before Spanish explorers arrived in the 1500s. A US Army post, Fort Brooke, was set up in 1824 and a small town grew beside it. In the 1880s Henry Plant's railroad and hotel arrived, and Vicente Martinez Ybor moved his cigar factories here, drawing Cuban, Spanish and Italian workers. Tampa became the Cigar City and later a military, port and finance hub.
