At a glance

4/5
Safety

There is no US advisory for its own cities, so this is based on UK FCDO advice for the USA, which notes violent crime rarely affects tourists but urges care in unfamiliar areas at night; FCDO also notes drug-related crime in Mexican states across the border; on the island the main risks are rip currents and spring break crowds.

3/5
Walkability

The small town along Padre Boulevard is manageable on foot, but the island is long.

2/5
Public transport

A free local shuttle has served the island, but check current routes; most visitors drive.

A short history

Padre Island takes its name from Padre Jose Nicolas Balli, a priest who ranched here around 1800. For a long time the island was remote, reached only by boat. A causeway from Port Isabel opened in the 1950s and the town of South Padre Island was incorporated in 1973. Today it is one of the most popular beach towns in Texas.
