A short history
James Oglethorpe founded Savannah in 1733 as the first city of the Georgia colony, laid out on a grid of wards around public squares. It grew as a cotton port built on enslaved labor. General Sherman captured the city in December 1864 but spared it from burning. After the demolition of a historic market in the 1950s, residents formed a preservation movement that saved much of the old town. Today the historic district is one of the largest in the US.
