Sarasota is a mid-sized city on Florida's Gulf Coast with an unusually strong arts scene and some of the softest white-sand beaches in the country on Siesta Key and Lido Key. The Ringling museum complex, botanical gardens and theaters give it a cultured feel, while St. Armands Circle and the keys offer easy beach days. It suits couples, families and older travelers who want sun with culture. Winter is the main season, when northern visitors arrive.

A short history

The area was home to Indigenous peoples for thousands of years before Spanish explorers arrived. Scottish settlers founded a colony in the 1880s, and the town grew as a winter resort in the 1910s and 1920s. Circus owner John Ringling invested heavily, built his Venetian-style mansion Ca' d'Zan and moved his circus's winter quarters here in 1927. The Ringling art collection, left to the state, anchored the city's arts reputation.
