A short history
The Ottomans founded Sarajevo in the 1460s, and it grew into a trading city with mosques, markets and bathhouses. Austria-Hungary took control in 1878 and added grand European style buildings. In 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated here, an event that set off World War I. The city hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics. From 1992 to 1996 it endured a siege of almost four years, the longest of a capital city in modern warfare.
