A short history

San Jose was founded in 1737 around a small church in the Central Valley. Coffee exports from the 1830s brought wealth, paving the way for theaters and mansions. It became the capital in 1823 after a brief civil conflict with Cartago. It was one of the first cities in the world to have public electric street lighting, in 1884. The National Theatre was opened in 1897, funded by a tax on coffee.
