EtiquetteDress in layers.
  • Never leave anything in a parked car.
  • Alcatraz sells out weeks ahead.
  • Bring layers; summer fog is cold.
  • Cable car lines are long at the turnarounds.
  • Never leave bags, luggage or anything visible in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
  • Book Alcatraz tickets weeks ahead, as they sell out, especially in summer.
  • Muir Woods requires an advance parking or shuttle reservation.
  • Fog can hide the Golden Gate Bridge, so check the forecast and have a backup plan.

A short history

The Spanish founded a mission and presidio here in 1776. The 1849 Gold Rush turned it into a boomtown. Rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake and fire, it later became a center of counterculture and then tech. San Francisco was rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed much of the city.
