4/5
Safety

There is no US advisory for its own cities, so this is based on UK FCDO advice for the USA, which notes violent crime rarely affects tourists but urges care in unfamiliar areas at night; in San Antonio the downtown tourist core and River Walk are busy and generally safe, with normal city precautions at night.

4/5
Walkability

Downtown, the River Walk and the Alamo are compact and walkable; the missions need a ride or bike.

3/5
Public transport

VIA buses serve the city and the missions, and river taxis run along the River Walk.

A short history

Spanish missionaries and soldiers founded the mission of San Antonio de Valero, later called the Alamo, and a presidio here in 1718. Several more missions followed along the river. In 1836 the Battle of the Alamo became a rallying cry of the Texas Revolution. The River Walk was developed from the 1930s as a flood-control and beautification project, and the 1968 world's fair brought further growth.
