A short history

The Te Arawa people settled the Rotorua lakes after arriving on the Te Arawa canoe. Visitors came from the 1800s to see the Pink and White Terraces, until the 1886 Tarawera eruption destroyed them. The government built a spa town with the Bath House in 1908. Maori guiding traditions continue at Whakarewarewa. Today it is a center of Maori culture and geothermal tourism.
