A short history
Diriyah, on the edge of today's Riyadh, was the seat of the first Saudi state, founded in the 18th century. Riyadh itself was a walled oasis town, and Abdulaziz Ibn Saud's capture of its Masmak fort in 1902 began the modern kingdom, proclaimed in 1932. Oil revenue from the mid 20th century turned it into a huge modern capital. Saudi Arabia opened tourist visas in 2019, and the city has since added festivals and new attractions.
