A short history

The Powhatan people lived along the James River when English colonists arrived in 1607, and Richmond was founded in 1737 at the river's falls. Patrick Henry gave his Give me liberty or give me death speech at St. John's Church in 1775, and the city became Virginia's capital in 1780. During the Civil War it was the capital of the Confederacy and a major slave trading center. Today the city is reinterpreting that past, and its old Confederate statues on Monument Avenue were removed in 2020 and 2021.
