A short history
Recife grew as the port of Olinda, the Portuguese colonial capital of Pernambuco, built on sugar cane wealth. From 1630 to 1654 the Dutch ruled the region and developed Recife under Maurice of Nassau, leaving bridges, canals and the first synagogue in the Americas. After the Portuguese returned, Recife overtook Olinda as the main city. Its Carnival, with frevo and maracatu rhythms, is one of the most famous in Brazil.
