A short history

The Kaweskar people traveled these fjords by canoe, while the Aonikenk hunted guanaco on the steppe. German explorer Hermann Eberhard reached the area in the 1890s, and British and Chilean ranchers soon followed with huge sheep farms. The town was founded in 1911 to serve them. The Puerto Bories meat packing plant, opened in 1915, was the main employer for decades until it closed in the 1970s. Tourism to Torres del Paine, made a national park in 1959, now drives the local economy.
