Providence is Rhode Island's compact capital, a college city home to Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. Its East Side has one of the best preserved stretches of colonial and Federal era houses in the US, and downtown wraps around a small river famous for WaterFire nights. Thanks to its culinary school and Italian roots, it punches well above its weight for food. It suits food lovers, history fans and couples, and pairs well with Newport.

A short history

Roger Williams founded Providence in 1636 after being banished from Massachusetts, promising religious freedom to all settlers. The town grew rich on maritime trade, including the transatlantic slave trade, before turning to textiles and jewelry making in the 1800s. Immigrants from Italy, Portugal, Ireland and later Latin America shaped its neighborhoods. A 1990s renaissance uncovered the downtown rivers, which had been paved over, and created the riverside parks used for WaterFire.
