Portland is Maine's largest city, a compact port on Casco Bay with brick warehouses, working wharves and one of the best food scenes for its size in the US. Visitors come for lobster, craft beer, island ferries and nearby lighthouses like Portland Head Light. It suits food lovers and couples, and works as a base for the Maine coast. Summer and early fall are the main seasons.

A short history

The Wabanaki peoples lived around Casco Bay before English settlement in the 1630s. The town was destroyed several times in wars, including by the British navy in 1775. A great fire in 1866 burned much of the center, which was rebuilt in the brick Victorian style now seen in the Old Port. The poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born here, and the city's waterfront revived as a dining and arts district from the 1970s.
