  • Red flags on beaches mean no swimming.
  • Agree jet ski terms in writing or avoid them.
  • Wear a helmet and have a valid licence for scooters.
  • Book island trips with licensed operators.
  • Check the current visa-free stay length and complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card before arrival.
  • Heed red flag warnings on beaches in the wet season; rip currents are dangerous.

A short history

Phuket grew rich from tin mining in the 1800s, which drew many Chinese migrants. Their Sino-Portuguese shophouses still line Old Phuket Town. Tourism took off from the 1980s, and the island was hit hard by the 2004 tsunami before rebuilding. Tin mining brought Chinese migrants to Phuket in the 1800s, shaping the architecture of the old town.
