A short history

Polynesians settled Tahiti many centuries ago, and the island was ruled by chiefly families such as the Pomare dynasty. European explorers, including Wallis, Bougainville and Cook, arrived from 1767. Missionaries came in 1797, and Papeete grew as a port in the 1800s. France made Tahiti a protectorate in 1842 and a colony in 1880. Papeete is now the capital of French Polynesia.
