A short history

Oklahoma City was born in a single day during the Land Run of April 22, 1889, when settlers raced to claim land in former Indian Territory. Oil was discovered under the city in 1928, and wells even stood on the Capitol grounds. Oklahoma is home to 39 tribal nations, many moved here by forced removal in the nineteenth century. In 1995 a truck bomb destroyed the Murrah Federal Building, killing 168 people, an event now remembered at the National Memorial.
