A short history

The falls formed about 12,000 years ago as glaciers retreated and the Niagara River cut through the escarpment. The area is the traditional territory of Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe peoples. Tourists began arriving in the early 1800s, and the falls became a famous honeymoon spot. The Niagara Parks Commission was created in 1885 to protect the Canadian riverside from private development. Hydroelectric plants now divert much of the river's flow.
