A short history

Newport was founded in 1639 by settlers seeking religious freedom, and it became a major colonial port, home to one of the oldest synagogues in the US. It was also deeply involved in the transatlantic slave trade. In the late 1800s, the richest American families built enormous summer cottages here, such as The Breakers. The city hosted the America's Cup sailing races for decades, and the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals began in the 1950s. The metro figure is for the Providence metropolitan area, which includes Newport.
