3/5
Walkability

Ponta Negra's seafront is easy on foot, but the city is spread out along the coast.

2/5
Public transport

City buses exist but are confusing for visitors; ride apps and tours are the practical choice.

A short history

The Portuguese founded Natal on Christmas Day 1599, which gave the city its name, beside the star-shaped Forte dos Reis Magos. The Dutch held the area for some years in the 1600s. During the Second World War the US built a major air base nearby, used as a bridge to Africa. Tourism took off from the 1980s with the Via Costeira hotel strip.
