A short history

The Wampanoag lived on the island long before English settlers bought it in 1659. In the 1700s and early 1800s Nantucket was the whaling capital of the world, and its captains sailed every ocean. The Great Fire of 1846 and the decline of whaling left the island poor, which preserved its old buildings. Tourism revived it from the late 1800s, and the whole island is now a National Historic Landmark district.
