A short history
For most of history Mykonos was a modest island of farmers and sailors, overshadowed by neighboring Delos, one of the most sacred sanctuaries of ancient Greece and the mythical birthplace of Apollo. The island's windmills ground grain for passing ships, and its captains took part in the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s. Archaeologists working on Delos helped bring the first visitors in the late 1800s. Tourism took off from the 1950s, and Mykonos became known as a glamorous, LGBTQ friendly island with a famous party scene.
