A short history

Moscow is first mentioned in chronicles in 1147. It grew into the center of the Grand Duchy of Muscovy and then the Russian state. Peter the Great moved the capital to Saint Petersburg in 1712, but Moscow regained the role in 1918 under the Bolsheviks. It was the capital of the Soviet Union until 1991.
