A short history

Potawatomi, Menominee and other nations lived here before fur traders arrived. The city formed in 1846 from three rival settlements, which is why some bridges cross the river at angles. German immigrants made it a brewing capital, home to Pabst, Schlitz and Miller. Harley-Davidson was founded here in 1903, and the city became a manufacturing powerhouse before reinventing its waterfront in recent decades.
