A short history

Miami Beach was a mangrove-covered strip until developers like Carl Fisher dredged and filled it in the 1910s. A building boom in the 1930s gave South Beach the largest concentration of Art Deco architecture in the world. The area declined in later decades but preservationists won protection for the Art Deco District in 1979. Fashion shoots, nightlife and Art Basel since 2002 revived it as a global destination.
