A short history

Mecca was a trading town on caravan routes and the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad around 570. Islam spread from here in the 600s. The Grand Mosque has been greatly expanded in recent decades to hold millions of pilgrims. The Masjid al-Haram has been expanded many times, most recently in large Saudi projects.
