A short history

Louisville was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark at the Falls of the Ohio, the only natural barrier on the river, where goods had to be unloaded and carried around. It was named after King Louis XVI of France for his help in the American Revolution. Churchill Downs held the first Kentucky Derby in 1875. Muhammad Ali was born here in 1942. In 2003 the city merged with Jefferson County, which is why the population figure is for the consolidated city.
