A short history

The Romans built the town of Emona here in the 1st century AD. As Laibach it was part of the Habsburg lands for about six centuries. A major earthquake in 1895 led to rebuilding in Vienna Secession style, which gives the center its elegant look. Between the wars architect Joze Plecnik reshaped the riverbanks, bridges and squares. Ljubljana became the capital of independent Slovenia in 1991.
