4/5
Safety

Based on UK FCDO travel advice for the USA (there is no US advisory for domestic travel): violent crime rarely affects tourists, so normal city precautions apply; around Tahoe the main risks are cold water, winter roads, altitude and wildfire smoke in late summer.

2/5
Walkability

Towns are walkable in small pockets, but the lake is large and a car is needed.

2/5
Public transport

TART and Tahoe Transportation District buses and seasonal shuttles run around parts of the lake, but service is limited.

TippingTip 18 to 20 percent at sit-down restaurants, a few dollars per drink at bars, and 15 to 20 percent for taxis and tours.
PaymentsCards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere; carry a little cash for tips and small vendors.
EtiquetteLeave no trace, keep food away from bears and do not feed wildlife. Dress in layers.
  • The lake water is very cold even in summer; cold shock can be dangerous.
  • Carry tire chains in winter; chain controls are common on mountain passes.
  • Altitude is about 1900 m, so sunburn and dehydration come fast.
  • Parking at Emerald Bay and Sand Harbor fills early on summer weekends.
  • Wildfire smoke can affect late summer air quality.
  • Vikingsholm tours run May to September; the 2026 season ends September 30, and the hike is a steep 2-mile round trip.
  • Emerald Bay parking costs 10 USD a day at last check; fees apply year-round.
  • Heavenly's summer gondola price and hours are on the resort's site; check before going.

A short history

The Washoe people have lived around the lake for thousands of years, spending summers on its shores. Explorer John C. Fremont recorded the lake in 1844, and the Comstock silver boom in nearby Nevada led to heavy logging of its forests. Wealthy families built summer estates in the early 1900s, and the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley, now Palisades Tahoe, made it a ski destination. Protecting the lake's clarity has been a major regional effort for decades.
