A short history

Kigali was founded in 1907 under German rule and became the capital when Rwanda gained independence in 1962. The 1994 genocide against the Tutsi killed hundreds of thousands, and the city has since been rebuilt and is now known for cleanliness and order. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a central place of remembrance.
