Kansas City straddles the Missouri and Kansas state line, with most visitor sights on the Missouri side. It is famous for slow-smoked barbecue, its jazz heritage at 18th and Vine and more fountains than almost any city in the world. The free Nelson-Atkins Museum and the National WWI Museum are standouts. It suits food lovers, music fans and budget travellers.

A short history

The town grew from a riverside trading post where the Missouri River bends, and it outfitted travellers on the Santa Fe, Oregon and California trails. Stockyards and railroads made it a cattle and grain hub after the Civil War. In the 1920s and 1930s its nightclubs fostered a distinctive jazz style, and the Negro National League was founded here in 1920. Union Station opened in 1914, and the Liberty Memorial, now the WWI museum, was dedicated in 1926.
