At a glance

4/5
Safety

Based on UK FCDO travel advice for the USA (there is no US advisory for domestic travel): violent crime rarely affects tourists, so normal city precautions apply; here the real risks are wildlife such as bears and moose, mountain weather and winter driving.

3/5
Walkability

Downtown Jackson is very walkable, but the parks need a car or tour.

2/5
Public transport

START buses link Jackson and Teton Village year-round, but they do not go into the national parks.

  • Carry bear spray on trails and know how to use it.
  • Book summer lodging months ahead; prices are high.
  • Many Yellowstone roads close from early November to spring.
  • The altitude is about 1900 m in town, so drink water and take it easy at first.
  • Fill up on gas before entering the parks.
  • Grand Teton annual pass costs 70 USD; on foot or bike, fees are per person 20 USD for 7 days at the time of research.
  • Yellowstone private vehicle entry is 35 USD for seven days; non-US residents aged 16 and over pay an extra 100 USD nonresident fee unless they have an annual pass.
  • Many park roads and facilities close in winter and mud season.

A short history

Shoshone, Crow, Blackfeet and other tribes hunted in the valley seasonally for centuries. Fur trappers in the 1800s called mountain valleys holes, and named this one after trapper David Jackson. Homesteaders ranched here from the 1880s, and John D. Rockefeller Jr. quietly bought land that later became part of Grand Teton National Park in 1950. Skiing and tourism took over from ranching in the late 20th century.
