A short history

Smyrna, the ancient name of Izmir, was a major Aegean port for thousands of years, with Greek, Roman, Byzantine and later Ottoman rule. Its location made it a hub for trade between east and west and home to diverse communities. A large fire in 1922 destroyed much of the old city after the Turkish War of Independence. The modern city was rebuilt as a port and trade centre, and hosts the International Izmir Fair each year.
