Tap waterUse bottled water
TippingLeave about 10 percent in restaurants.
PaymentsCards are widely accepted; keep cash for bazaars and small shops.
EtiquetteWomen should cover their hair in mosques and everyone should cover shoulders and knees. Remove shoes before entering mosques.
  • Mosques close to visitors during prayer times, especially Friday midday.
  • Hagia Sophia charges foreigners and uses a separate upper gallery route.
  • Agree prices before shoe-shine or carpet offers.
  • Tap water is treated but most people drink bottled.
  • Agree on a price or insist on the meter in taxis.
  • Shoe-shine scams: if a brush drops, do not pay for a shine.
  • Bar and restaurant scams in nightlife areas: check the menu prices first.
  • Check prices and currency rules because inflation is high.

A short history

Founded as Byzantium, the city became Constantinople, capital of the Roman and Byzantine empires, in 330. The Ottomans took it in 1453 and made it the seat of their empire for nearly five centuries. Ankara became the capital of the republic in 1923, but Istanbul remains Turkey's largest city.
