A short history

Indianapolis was chosen as Indiana's capital in 1820 and laid out on a grid with Monument Circle at its centre. It grew as a rail and manufacturing hub in the nineteenth century. The Motor Speedway opened in 1909 and the first Indianapolis 500 ran in 1911. The city has more war memorials than most US cities, and since the 1980s it has rebuilt its downtown around sports, conventions and museums.
