3/5
Safety

There is no US advisory for its own cities, so this is based on UK FCDO advice for the USA, which notes violent crime rarely affects tourists but urges care in unfamiliar areas at night; in Houston use normal city precautions, avoid leaving valuables in cars, and watch for flash flooding in heavy rain.

2/5
Walkability

Houston is very car-oriented; only areas like the Museum District and downtown are pleasant to walk.

3/5
Public transport

METRORail light rail links downtown, the Museum District and NRG Park, and buses cover the city; pay with a METRO card or app.

A short history

Houston was founded in 1836 on Buffalo Bayou and named after Sam Houston, hero of the Texas Revolution won that year at nearby San Jacinto. It grew as a cotton and rail center, and the 1901 oil strike at Spindletop and the Houston Ship Channel made it an energy capital. In 1961 NASA chose the city for its human spaceflight center. Since then it has become a major international hub and medical center.
