A short history

Hoi An was a busy international port from the 15th to the 19th century, trading with Chinese, Japanese and European merchants. Chinese assembly halls and the Japanese Covered Bridge reflect that mix. Silting of the river moved trade to Da Nang, freezing the old town in time. It became a UNESCO site in 1999.
