A short history

Cappadocia was shaped by volcanic ash that eroded into towers and soft rock easy to carve. Early Christians settled the area and carved churches and monasteries, many with frescoes dating from the 10th to the 13th centuries. Local people also dug large underground cities for shelter. Goreme later became a village of cave homes and since the late 20th century has grown into a centre for tourism.
