At a glance

4/5
Safety

Based on UK FCDO travel advice for the USA (there is no US advisory for domestic travel): violent crime rarely affects tourists, so normal city precautions apply; on the island the main risks are rip currents, summer heat and hurricane season from June to November.

3/5
Walkability

The Strand area is walkable, but the Seawall and attractions stretch for miles along the island.

2/5
Public transport

Island Transit buses and a heritage trolley line connect the Strand and Seawall at limited frequency.

A short history

Galveston grew in the 1800s into Texas's busiest port and one of its richest cities, with banks and mansions along the Strand. The 1900 hurricane killed thousands of people and remains the deadliest natural disaster in US history. Afterward the city built the seawall and raised the level of the island. Houston's ship channel later took most of the port trade, which left much of the Victorian downtown intact. The metro figure is for the Houston metropolitan area, which includes Galveston.
