A short history
The islands were found by chance in 1535 when the Bishop of Panama's ship drifted off course. For centuries pirates and whalers stopped here, taking thousands of giant tortoises for food. Ecuador claimed the islands in 1832, and Charles Darwin's visit in 1835 helped shape his theory of evolution. Most of the land became a national park in 1959, and the islands were among the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1978. Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz is the largest town and the main base for day trips.
