Most visitors use it as a base for Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks, all within about 1.5 hours. In town there are the quirky Forestiere Underground Gardens, a good zoo and the Tower District's theatres and cafes. It suits road-trippers, families and budget travellers.

2/5
Walkability

Fresno is spread out and built for cars; the Tower District is the main walkable area.

2/5
Public transport

FAX buses run in the city, and YARTS seasonal buses go to Yosemite, but most visitors drive.

A short history

The Yokuts and Mono peoples lived in the valley and foothills before settlers came. Fresno was founded by the Central Pacific Railroad in 1872, and irrigation turned the dry plain into vineyards and orchards; raisins became a signature crop. Waves of Armenian, Mexican, Japanese, Punjabi and Hmong immigrants shaped the city. Italian immigrant Baldassare Forestiere spent decades digging his underground home here in the early 1900s.
