A short history

The falls were sacred to the Guarani people long before Spanish explorers arrived in 1541. National parks were created on both sides in the 1930s and listed by UNESCO in the 1980s. The Itaipu Dam, finished in the 1980s, brought growth to the town. Today it is a tri border hub with Argentina and Paraguay.
