Fortaleza, capital of Ceara, is a large, sunny northeastern city with a long urban seafront and steady trade winds. Visitors come for Praia do Futuro, the Beira Mar promenade, lively forro nights and the water park at Beach Park. It is also the base for trips to dune beaches such as Cumbuco, Canoa Quebrada and, further away, Jericoacoara.

A short history

The city grew around a Dutch fort of the 1640s that the Portuguese later took over and renamed. For a long time it was a modest port, until cotton and later commerce helped it grow in the 1800s. Ceara was one of the first provinces to abolish slavery, in 1884. In recent decades Fortaleza has become one of Brazil's largest cities and a major beach destination.
