A short history
Spanish explorers crossed the Rio Grande here in the late 1500s, and the pass became a key stop on the Camino Real between Mexico City and Santa Fe. Missions at Ysleta and Socorro date from the 1680s, after the Pueblo Revolt pushed Spanish settlers and Tigua people south. The area became part of the US after the Mexican-American War. A long border dispute over the shifting river was settled in 1963, remembered at the Chamizal National Memorial.
