A short history

Dresden grew as the seat of the Saxon rulers, who built it into a city of art and music in the 18th century. Bombing in February 1945 destroyed the centre. Reconstruction was long, and the Frauenkirche was only finished in 2005. The city now blends rebuilt baroque landmarks with a lively alternative district across the river.
