A short history

French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded a fort here in 1701 on the strait (detroit in French) between Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie. Henry Ford's assembly line made the city the world's car capital in the early twentieth century, and wartime production earned it the name Arsenal of Democracy. Berry Gordy founded Motown Records here in 1959. Population fell for decades after the 1960s and the city went through bankruptcy in 2013, but downtown has since seen major reinvestment.
