A short history

Destin began as a small fishing village in the 1800s, named after Leonard Destin, a fishing captain from New England. For decades it was a quiet harbour known for deep-sea fishing, helped by the nearby drop-off into deep Gulf water. The bridge to Okaloosa Island and post-war tourism turned it into a resort. It became a city in 1984.
