A short history

Dakar grew from a French trading post in the 1800s and became the capital of French West Africa. Senegal gained independence in 1960 under Leopold Senghor, a poet and president who supported the arts. The city is a hub for West African music and fashion, and the offshore island of Goree is a World Heritage Site tied to the slave trade era.
